Moving to a New House Stories for Kids
For a child, a move means saying goodbye to almost everything familiar at once: their bedroom, the neighbors, the park down the street, and sometimes their friends and school. Even when the new house is exciting, a stack of boxes can feel like the old life is being packed away.
A story gives your child a way to practice. They watch a character walk into an empty house, miss the old one, and slowly find the things that make the new place feel like home. DandyTale makes a brand-new illustrated story about moving, written at the right reading level for your child, ready to read together tonight.

When to read a moving story
Most families get the most out of a moving story by reading it more than once:
- A few weeks before the move, once your child knows it's happening, so the idea has time to sink in.
- During packing, when the house starts to look different and questions come up.
- In the first nights in the new house. A familiar story at bedtime helps a strange room feel safer.
Helping your child with the feelings that come with a move
It's normal for kids to feel excited, sad and unsure all in the same week. A story lets them see a character feel all of that, without it being about them directly.
- Pause and ask how the character feels about the old house. It's often easier for kids to talk about a character than about themselves.
- Let your child pack a small box of favorite things to open first in the new room, like the character's first unpacked treasure.
- Talk about what will stay the same: the same family, the same bedtime story, the same stuffed animal.
A story for every step of the move
The four ideas above follow a move from start to finish: packing up the old room, walking into the new house, the first night in a new bedroom, and meeting the neighbors at a block party. Read them in order over a few weeks, or pick the one that matches where your family is right now. Each idea opens the Story Studio with that story already picked. You just choose the reading age and a character.
Questions parents ask
What ages are the moving stories for?
Children ages 2 to 9. Little Listener (2-4) is best for toddlers and preschoolers, while Early Reader (5-7) and Confident Reader (8-9) tell a longer story with more feelings to talk about.
Can the story include our new house or town?
No. DandyTale doesn't use children's names, photos or personal details like addresses. The hero is a character you pick from our cast, or, on a monthly plan, one you design yourself from preset options.
How long does it take to make a story?
A few minutes. You answer a few quick questions, and DandyTale writes the story and illustrates every page. It's saved to your bookshelf, so you can read it again in the new house.
How much does it cost?
A single book is $4.99, with no subscription. Monthly plans start at $12.99 for 4 books.
