A calm doctor visit story for kids

A check-up is full of small surprises: a cold stethoscope, a light in your ears, someone you don't know asking you to open wide. None of it hurts, but not knowing what comes next is often the hardest part.
A picture book that walks through the visit in order, from the waiting room to "all done", lets your child rehearse it at home first. DandyTale makes that book for you, illustrated and written for your child's reading age, in a calm, social-story style.

What a calm check-up story covers
In the Calm & Clear style, the story follows the visit step by step, in short, literal sentences:
- Checking in and waiting, with a book or a toy.
- Getting measured: how tall, and standing on the scale.
- The stethoscope, and that it might feel cold.
- Looking in ears and mouth with a little light.
- One thing the character can do: hold a comfort toy, take three big breaths, ask a question.
- Finishing, and a calm, proud ending.

A few ways families use the story and the schedule:
- Read it a few days before and again on the day.
- Play doctor at home: listen to a teddy's heart, look in its ears.
- Let your child carry the schedule and tick off each step.
- If a shot is planned, talk to your doctor about how best to explain it; our stories keep to the calm, routine parts of the visit.
A note on what these books are
DandyTale books are picture books, not therapy or medical advice, and they're no substitute for talking with your child's doctor. We never ask about your child's diagnosis, name or photo: the hero is a character you pick.
Questions parents ask
Is this a social story?
It's written in a social-story style: calm, literal, step-by-step, with a coping step and a reassuring ending. "Social Stories" is a trademark of Carol Gray, who created the method; DandyTale isn't affiliated with her.
What age is it for?
Ages 2-9, in three reading levels: Little Listener (2-4), Early Reader (5-7) and Confident Reader (8-9).
Can I use my child's name or photo?
No. To protect your child's privacy, DandyTale never uses children's names or photos. You pick a hero from our cast, or design one from preset options on a monthly plan.
Is the printable free?
Yes. The My Doctor Check-Up visual schedule is free to print, with no account. Reading the example book is free too; your first book of your own is free with a 7-day trial.
