A calm airplane story for kids

Cover of Zora's First Flight, an example DandyTale book

A first flight is a long chain of new things: crowds, lines, the security belt, a loud take-off and ears that feel funny on the way up. Holiday travel adds busy airports and changed routines on top.

A picture book that goes through the trip in order, from packing the bag to the plane going up, up, up, gives your child the whole day in advance. DandyTale makes that book for you, illustrated and written for your child's reading age, in a calm, social-story style.

Travel stories you can make before the trip

Flying on an Airplane

The lines, noises and ear-popping are all new.

The lesson: knowing each step makes the trip feel easier.

A Long Car Ride

Sitting still for hours is hard.

The lesson: games, snacks and stops help the miles go by.

A Holiday Visit with Family

Lots of people, hugs and noise all at once.

The lesson: you can wave instead of hug, and take quiet breaks.

Sleeping Somewhere New

The bed and the nighttime sounds are different.

The lesson: bringing something from home makes anywhere cozy.

When Plans Change

The trip to the park got canceled.

The lesson: plans can change, and the day can still be good.

Waiting My Turn

Waiting feels really, really long.

The lesson: counting or humming helps the time pass.

Read it free: a first flight (ages 5-7)

In Zora's First Flight, the lines are long and the airport is loud. Dad explains the beeping, gives Zora her headphones, and they take each step together, all the way to their seats on the plane.

What a calm airplane story covers

In the Calm & Clear style, the story follows the trip in order, in short, literal sentences:

  • Packing a bag with a comfort item and something to do.
  • The airport: lines, crowds and walking through security.
  • Waiting at the gate, and how long waiting can feel.
  • Finding the seat and buckling up.
  • Take-off: the noise, the push back into the seat, ears that pop.
  • One thing the character can do: headphones, a big yawn, three slow breaths.

How to use it before the trip

Some ideas from families who travel with young kids:

  • Read it a few times in the week before, and once more at the gate.
  • Practice the security step at home: put a backpack through a "tunnel" made of chairs.
  • Pack the comfort item and headphones from the story into the carry-on together.
  • Point out each step on the schedule as it happens, and let your child tick it off.

A note on what these books are

DandyTale books are picture books, not therapy, and they're no substitute for advice from your child's doctor or therapist. We never ask about your child's diagnosis, name or photo: the hero is a character you pick.

Questions parents ask

Is this a social story?

It's written in a social-story style: calm, literal, step-by-step, with a coping step and a reassuring ending. "Social Stories" is a trademark of Carol Gray, who created the method; DandyTale isn't affiliated with her.

Can it include our actual destination?

Not by name: stories are made from our story ideas, like "Flying on an Airplane" or "A Holiday Visit with Family". Many families make one book for the flight and one for the visit.

Can I use my child's name or photo?

No. To protect your child's privacy, DandyTale never uses children's names or photos. You pick a hero from our cast, or design one from preset options on a monthly plan.

Is the printable free?

Yes. The My Airplane Trip visual schedule is free to print, with no account. Reading the example book is free too; your first book of your own is free with a 7-day trial.
