A calm Christmas story for kids

Cover of Milo's Big Day Plan, an example DandyTale book

Christmas is exciting, and that is exactly what makes it hard for some kids: weeks of build-up, a morning that starts too early, wrapping paper and surprises, visitors, a changed routine and a day that goes on much longer than usual. For a child who likes to know what's coming, all that excitement can turn into too much.

A short picture book read in the days before turns the day into steps your child already knows: waking up and waiting, opening presents one at a time, saying hello their way, taking a quiet break, and bedtime. DandyTale makes that book for you, illustrated and written for your child's reading age, in a calm, social-story style.

What a calm Christmas story covers

Every DandyTale Christmas story in the Calm & Clear style follows the day in order, in short, literal sentences:

  • Waking up, and waiting until everyone is ready.
  • Opening presents one at a time, and that wrapping paper can be loud.
  • That a present might be a surprise, or not what you hoped, and saying "thank you" either way.
  • Visitors arriving, and that a wave, a high five or a hug are all fine.
  • Where the quiet spot is, and how to ask for a break.
  • Bedtime, so the long day has a clear ending.

How to use it before Christmas

Families tend to get the most out of it like this:

  • Read the story a few times in the week before, and again on Christmas Eve.
  • Tell your child who is visiting and when, and show photos of relatives they don't see often.
  • Agree on a quiet spot and a break signal, and let visitors know about it.
  • Open presents one at a time, with a pause in between, rather than all at once.
  • Keep one part of the day the same as always, like a usual breakfast or bedtime story.

A note on what these books are

DandyTale books are picture books, not therapy, and they're no substitute for advice from your child's doctor or therapist. We never ask about your child's diagnosis, name or photo: the hero is a character you pick.

Questions parents ask

Is this a Christmas social story?

It's written in a social-story style: calm, literal, step-by-step, with a coping step and a reassuring ending. "Social Stories" is a trademark of Carol Gray, who created the method; DandyTale isn't affiliated with her.

What age is it for?

Ages 2-9. Little Listener (2-4) is shortest, Early Reader (5-7) adds a little more detail, and Confident Reader (8-9) is longest. Many families choose a younger level for a calmer, shorter read.

Is the printable free?

Yes. The My Christmas Day visual schedule is free to print, with no account. Reading the example book is free too; your first book of your own is free with a 7-day trial.

Can I use my child's name or photo?

No. To protect your child's privacy, DandyTale never uses children's names or photos. You pick a hero from our cast, or design one from preset options on a monthly plan.

Do you have other Christmas stories?

Yes. Our Christmas stories page has three free picture books, one for each age, and a free printable Christmas storybook.
